Dentures have a lot to offer to patients who are missing teeth<\/a>. They can be remarkably powerful, allowing you to eat, chew, and speak more effectively than you could before. However, wearing them will take some getting used to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When your dentist first gives you your prosthetic, there\u2019s a way to ease into the routine of wearing them on a daily basis. Here\u2019s what the first few weeks of wearing your dentures are likely to look like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The First Day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you got your dentures immediately after a tooth removal, then they\u2019re probably functioning like a kind of bandage that can help your extraction wounds heal. This will probably be the only time that your dentist will recommend wearing your dentures for a full 24 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You should stick with soft foods until your wounds start to heal, and if your dentist prescribed you painkillers, feel free to take them as directed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First 14 Days<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After the first 24 hours, you should see your dentist so that they can remove your new dentures and check on your wounds. It\u2019s normal to start to develop some sore spots, or to have an unusual amount of saliva during the first few weeks or so\u2014this will fade with time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The First Month<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After the wounds heal completely and you stop developing sore spots, you\u2019ll have to make more frequent visits to the dentist. As you heal your gums will shrink, meaning that you\u2019ll have to have your dentures relined to fit your mouth accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ll also have to spend some time learning to eat and talk properly again. If you find that you have a serious lisp, you might practice reading aloud until you feel comfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After The First Month<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At this point, you should be fairly used to the look and feel of your dentures. If you find that your gums continue to shrink with healing, you should let your dentist know; they\u2019ll be happy to help you with the relining process until the job is done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then all you have to worry about is maintenance. So long as you keep your dentures clean and don\u2019t abrade them, they should remain in good shape for a long time to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
