Man looking in mouth with hand mirrorDid you know cavities and gum disease aren’t the only dangers that could be lurking in your mouth? Over 54,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year. Sadly, it claims the lives of 12,000 Americans annually. With only a 68% 5-year survival rate, regular oral cancer screenings are essential. Your dentist can perform the screening you need during your routine cleaning and checkup. Here’s what you can expect from start to finish.

What are the Signs of Oral Cancer?

Oral cancer is classified as those affecting the mouth, neck, and head, but brain cancer is in a separate category. Contrary to common belief, you don’t have to be a smoker to be at risk. While tobacco does increase your odds, it can affect anyone.

Although it is easy to treat, it’s often not found until it has metastasized and reached advanced stages, which contributes to the high mortality rate. The early signs can be subtle, which include:

  • Lumps or bumps on the mouth or lips.
  • Oral sores that won’t heal.
  • Red or white patches in the mouth.
  • Shifting or loose teeth.
  • Feeling like something is caught in your throat.

Genetics and tobacco are common risk factors for oral cancer, but it can affect all ages and genders. However, it is also connected to a history of HPV, frequent consumption of alcohol, and possibly poorly fitting dentures.

Invest in the Power of Early Detection

Healthcare professionals believe that 80% of new oral cancer cases can be detected early through routine dental care. Besides checking the health of your teeth and gums, your dentist will also look for any lumps, sores, or other concerns. They will also check your neck, face, and lymph nodes. While a visual examination is effective, some dental practices also use special lights to detect cancerous cells.

No matter the method, if your dentist finds anything suspicious, they may recommend a biopsy to have tissue tested in a laboratory. They’ll inform you of the results and if any additional aftercare is needed.

Whether you know it or not, you have probably had an oral cancer screening before. Nonetheless, ask your dentist about having a screening during your next cleaning and checkup. You’ll invest in the power of early detection, even if you don’t think you’re at risk.
